The Public Sector Environment

Tuesday, May 24, 2011

A recent listing of a job position reveals the clause “Additional Requirements: 5-7 years of direct Information Architecture experience, ideally in public sector environment. (5 - 7 years)”.

Now I have long held that a resume should write itself from the job application; that is, each word and phrase of the job description should map on a 1-1 basis directly into your resume. (The same applies when writing a proposal; they are the same sort of document).

And further that if you can’t map the job specifications, you shouldn’t waste your time applying.

I have known too that I am not well-suited for the PS (Public Service) environment, and I meet with consultants who say that can’t tolerate the PS (Private Sector).

I have never analyzed why this should be so, but there it is. (I think my latest Public Sector project was in 1996).

Here’s my puzzle: Why should it make any difference on a project?

Especially why would a Public Sector tender stipulate that preference will be given to those who have “5-7 years of direct Information Architecture experience” in the Public Sector?

It seems to me that someone with 5-7 years of direct Information Architecture experience is valuable regardless of where they gained that experience, and rare, too.
